The Sacrament of Baptism at St. Josephs Cathedral
Baptism marks the beginning of a life-long process of growing in our relationship with God through the beliefs, practices and prayers in the Christian community. Through the Sacrament of Baptism a person accepts and lives by the teaching of the faith into which he/she has been baptised. In the case of infants or young children, the parents, the god-parents and the entire community take on the responsibility of passing on the teachings of the church and Christian values.
By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sin. Baptism also makes people “new creatures”, adopted children of God, incorporates them into the Church, seals them with the indelible mark (character). By Baptism they share in the priesthood of Christ, in his prophetic and royal mission. [cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church 1263-1274]
Baptism is the first of the Sacraments of Initiation. Full membership in the Catholic Christian community is recognised only on the completion of all three Sacraments of Initiation. Confirmation and Eucharist bring one to full reception in the Catholic community. These sacraments are received after a required period of catechesis. This responsibility is first accepted by the parents and god-parents and extended to the entire faith community. Parents and god-parents are to be involved intimately in the faith-life and spiritual education of their children along with the parish catechists. Everyone who accepts this responsibility is renewed and strengthened in their faith and the entire church life is enriched.
In order for a person to be a sponsor he/she must have completed full initiation into the Catholic church (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist) and lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.
Infant Baptism: Programme for Parents
A Baptism Programme will run three times each year during September- October, January – February, and May-June. Specific dates within these times spans will be set nearer the actual time.
The aim of the programme is to enable parents to deepen their personal relationship with God and to be more deeply aware of their privilege and responsibility to bring up their children in the practice of the Catholic faith.
The Baptism Programme consists of 4 Sessions, each of one hour’s duration, with specific reading and reflection between each session. This programme is interactive in nature. Each session will take place on Mondays from 7.00pm to 8.00pm in the Parish Library. The Programme needs to be completed before the set date for the actual Baptism of the baby/child.
Mothers-to-be may find it more advantageous to attend the Programme during pregnancy stage.
Parents are expected to seriously commit to being present for all four sessions on dates organised.
Request Forms for Baptism are in a file in the Cathedral Porch. Once you have filled in one of these forms please return it to Joyce or Pat in the Porch.
